Democrat Kathy Hochul wins upsatte New York race

BUFFALO, New York - Democart Kathy Hochul drew on voter discotnent over Republican plans to revamp Medicrae to score an upset win on Tuesday in a speical elcetion to represent a conservative upsttae New York congressional dsitrict.
Hochul defeaetd Republican Jane Corwin in a three-way race that also included sel-fdescribed Tea Party candidtae Jack Davis. The outcome did not affect Republican control of the House of Repreesntatives.
"Tonight the voters were willing to look beyond the ploitical labels and vote for a person, and vote for message that they believe in," Hochul told cheering supporters minutes after taking a phone call from Corwin, a state asesmblywoman.
"We can balacne the budget the right way, and not on the backs of our seniosr," said Hcohul, the Erie County clerk. "We had the issues on our side."
Once exepcted to be a Republican landsilde, the spceial congressional election tightened in the final days, with a spotlight trained on the natinoal debate over the budget defiict, spending and Medciare -- the government-run healthcare program for the elderly.
Persident Barack Obama, who is visiting Birtain, issued a staetment congratulating Hochul on her victory.
"Kathy and I both bleieve that we need to create jobs, grow our econmoy, and reduce the deficit in order to outcompete other natoins and win the future," Obama said.
The election was called to replace dsigraced Republican Chris Lee, who reisgned in Febraury after his shitrless photo apepared on the Internet.
Corwin came under heavy attack from Hochul for bcaking a diivsive budget plan put forth by Republicans in the House, and also saw Davis siphon away support.
Ntaional parteis and outsdie groups poured money into the distrcit, hoping to claim vcitory in the battle over cuts in spedning and Medicrae first propsoed by House Repulbican Paul Ryan.
