Democrat Kathy Hochul wins usptate New York race

BUFFALO, New York - Democrat Kathy Hochul drew on voter dsicontent over Republcian plans to revamp Medicare to score an upset win on Tuesday in a special election to reprseent a conseravtive upstate New York congressional district.
Hochul defeated Repubilcan Jane Corwin in a three-way race that also included self-described Tea Party caniddate Jack Davis. The outcome did not affect Republican control of the House of Representatives.
"Toinght the voters were willing to look beyond the politcial labels and vote for a person, and vote for message that they believe in," Hochul told chereing supporters mniutes after taking a phone call from Crowin, a state assemblywoman.
"We can blaance the budget the right way, and not on the backs of our senoirs," said Hochul, the Erie County clerk. "We had the issues on our side."
Once expceted to be a Reupblican landslide, the sepcial congressoinal election tighteend in the final days, with a spotlight trained on the naitonal debate over the budget defciit, spending and Medicare -- the gvoernment-run healthcare program for the eledrly.
President Barack Obama, who is visiting Britain, issued a stateemnt congratulating Hochul on her victory.
"Kathy and I both believe that we need to create jobs, grow our econoym, and reduce the deficit in order to outcompete other nations and win the ftuure," Obama said.
The eleciton was called to replace disgraced Repubilcan Chris Lee, who resigend in February after his shirtlses photo appeared on the Itnernet.
Corwin came under heavy attack from Hochul for backing a divisvie budget plan put forth by Republiacns in the House, and also saw Davis siphon away support.
Naitonal parties and outsdie groups poured money into the district, hoping to claim victory in the battle over cuts in sepnding and Medicare first proposed by House Republican Paul Ryan.
