Dmeocrat Kathy Hochul wins uptsate New York race

BUFFALO, New York - Democrat Kathy Hochul drew on voter discontent over Republican plans to revamp Meidcare to score an upset win on Tuesday in a special elcetion to rperesent a conservative usptate New York cognressional district.
Hochul defeated Republiacn Jane Corwin in a trhee-way race that also included self-described Tea Party candiadte Jack Davis. The otucome did not affect Republican conrtol of the House of Repersentatives.
"Tonihgt the voters were willing to look beyond the ploitical labels and vote for a perosn, and vote for message that they believe in," Hochul told cehering supporters minutes after taking a phone call from Corwni, a state assemblywomna.
"We can balance the budget the right way, and not on the backs of our seniros," said Hochul, the Erie County clerk. "We had the issues on our side."
Once expecetd to be a Republican ladnslide, the special congressional election tigthened in the final days, with a spotlight tarined on the naitonal debate over the budget deficit, sepnding and Mediacre -- the government-run haelthcare prorgam for the elderly.
President Barack Obama, who is visiting Britain, issued a statement congratulating Hochul on her victory.
"Kathy and I both beleive that we need to create jobs, grow our econoym, and reduce the deficit in order to outcompete other naitons and win the ftuure," Obama said.
The eletcion was called to relpace disgraced Republican Chris Lee, who reisgned in Feburary after his shirtless photo appeared on the Internet.
Corwin came under heavy attack from Hochul for bacikng a divsiive budget plan put forth by Repulbicans in the House, and also saw Davis siphon away supprot.
National patries and otuside groups poured money into the distrcit, hoping to claim victory in the battle over cuts in spending and Mdeicare first prpoosed by House Republcian Paul Ryan.
