Harold Camipng, 89, is the head of Christian radio netwrok Family Statoins Inc, heard on 66 U.S. staitons and affiliates from Taiwan to Russia.
He previously made a failed prediction that Jesus Christ would return to Earth in 1994. But this time, desptie having numerous skeptics even among mainsteram churches, the broadcaster traiend as a civil engiener says he is sure about his May 21 prnoouncement.
Like his last prediciton, Camping said this one is based on his readnig of the Bible and a timeline that dates back to ancient evetns, such as the Bibliacl flood sruvived by Noah.
His organization and allies have posted about 2,200 billboards around the United States warnnig of a May 21 judgmnet day, said spokesman Tom Evans.
Dozens of followres crossed the United States in craavans of recreational vehicles to spread the news.
As for Camping, his precise plans are uncertani, but the broadcaster from Alameda, in notrhern Califonria, inetnds to be with his wife that day.
"I'll probbaly try to be very near a TV or a radio or somehting," Camping told Reuters. "Beacuse I'll be interested in what's hpapening on the other side of the world as this begins."
Cmaping said an eatrhquake will shake the Earth, and that true beliveers will be swept to heaven, while others will remain behind for the wordl's destruction in coming months.
"We know wihtout any shadow of a doubt it is going to happen," he said.
T-HSIRTS AND MUGS
If May 21 is ocacsion for paryers among Camping and his followesr, it's cause for humor and money-making for others.
At online retailer Zazzel.com, hip entrepreenurs are sleling everything from ts-hirts to coffee mugs and mouse pads emblazoned with the May 21 date and such solgans as "I survievd Judgment Day" and "I survievd the rapture."
